Clean up your desktop

Your computer desktop is very much like your physical desk at work or home. Leave lots of 'stuff' lying around on it and it looks cluttered & overwhelming.

Sort the shortcuts you actually need and use into different sections of your desktop and delete any shortcuts you don't use (only the shortcuts, not the programs!)

And most of all, resist the urge to use your desktop as a storage facility. Utilise the virtual filing cabinets (folders) you've set up to store all of your files.

The result? A cleaner desktop and a stress-free you!

Schedule a regular digital declutter

As with your physical world, a regular digital declutter keeps everything in check and stops your computer and other devices getting clogged with "stuff".

Delete unwanted Internet Favourites; programs & apps you no longer use as well as shortcuts which may be cluttering your desktop.

Once you've deleted these items, empty your computers recycle bin or run a program such as CCleaner. Most operating systems also have a "defragging" or system maintenance function which helps to clear up left over file fragments and optimise your computers performance.

If all of this is a bit too technical - check in with your computer tech. person for their help.

Manage multiple email addresses easily

Do you have multiple email addresses?

Today a lot of websites require you to log in to purchase and interact on forums via an email address. You may have set up more than one over the years and now have too many to remember and deal with.

A great way to manage this situation (if you want to keep them all) is to use an email client. This is a program which you use to access and manage multiple email accounts.
We use Microsoft Outlook in our house, but there are others depending on your personal preferences - Google "email client" to check out the options for yourself.

Create virtual filing cabinets

A great way to organise your digital life is to think of each area as a filing
cabinet.

We all have sites saved in our "Internet Favourites"; multiple email accounts receiving a mountain of information every day and photos galore of our family & friends. Imagine if all of these things were just piled in a corner (a corner of your computer or digital device).

What happens when you want to retrieve something?

Firstly, you run for the hills because it's too overwhelming! If you are brave enough to get in there and look....you can't find anything!

Solution:

Create folders and use them!

Name your folders something meaningful to you for easy retrieval and you'll be well on your way to an organised digital world.

Back Up Your World

An external hard drive (or two) can be your saving grace should technology decide to turn on you.

Back up photos; schedules; contact lists, etc from your computer/phone/ipad and make the back ups regular!
You may never need the back up but you'll be glad you have it if you do :)

Delete v Unsubscribe

Do you check your emails only to find a mountain of newsletter subscriptions; blog updates, etc that you never read? What do you do at this point....? Delete, delete, delete....

Why not unsubscribe instead? You'll save yourself time every single day + be clearing some digital clutter. Your time (and your sanity is worth it!)

Mirror, Mirror...

If you have the wall space in a walk-in robe, install a full length mirror so you can check your whole outfit before you walk out the door.

If your wardrobe is a cupboard and not a built-in unit/room, you can use the inside of your door to do the same thing.

No more standing on the edge of the bathtub to check in the bathroom mirror or asking your hubby things like "Does my bum look big in this?" (This always ends badly!!)

Wardrobe Organising Tip - Become a merchandiser

Become a merchandiser!

Have you ever walked into a shop and thought 'Oh Wow, everything looks gorgeous - I want it all!' ??

That's clever merchandising!

You can do this in your wardrobe too. Once you've decided on your wardrobe zones, you can then do some merchandising of your own.
Ideas for "merchandising" your wardrobe:

* Sort your wardrobe zones by colour - lightest to darkest to make coordinating outfits easier.

* Match accessories with an outfit and store them in your wardrobe together (this particularly works for formal outfits)

* Group handbags and shoes together by style eg: casual; business; formal

* If you have the space, put a wire dress form in your wardrobe to store & display scarves; jewellery, etc. (This is one of my all-time "wants"!!)

Create Zones

This is very much a recurring theme throughout the process of organising your home, but well worth doing in terms of saving time and creating an uncluttered look.

Divide your wardrobe into sections that work for and make sense to you and how you use your space.

Examples of zones:

* weekend casual/work/formal
* pants/skirts/dresses/shirts/jackets
* winter/summer/all seasons
We all think and live differently so what makes sense to you may not necessarily makes sense to a friend or even your partner.

The general concept of zones however, will make putting away your clothes easier and stop the rummaging when you are piecing together an outfit for the day :)

Wardrobe Organising Tip #4 - Protect your clothes & accessories!

Protect your clothes & accessories!

Clothes are expensive items. One outfit can cost up to a couple hundred dollars (or more) when you include shoes, accessories and underwear.

So, it's a great idea to protect your clothes & accessories!

When you store them back in your wardrobe, especially if the item is seasonal be sure to use storage solutions such as suit/coat bags; clear shoe boxes (they also come in tall versions especially for boots) or calico/cotton bags to protect from dust.

Your clothes and shoes will last longer and when you pull something out of the wardrobe, you can be sure it's ready to wear!
